A nickel/chromium wire is heated to 960°C and the insulating material is pushed against it with a force of 1 N. It is checked that the insulating material does not attain a certain temperature or catches fire so as to prevent fire hazard in their vicinity

High-Current Arc Ignition Test Machine is used for evaluating Ignition Performance Level Category as per UL 746A. Any insulating material should resist electrical arcing when a high current tries to make path between a short distance that is only ‘connected’ by insulating surface. This is a requirement as per IEC 60947 - 1, BS EN 60950 - 1 and IEC 60335 - 2 - 40. Needle Flame Test Apparatus is the commonly used equipment for Fire Hazard testing for solid insulating materials. This test apparatus is covered in IEC 60695-11-5 and commonly referred for various devices in many standards such as IEC 60335-1, IEC 60695-11-3, IEC 60695-11-10, IEC 60695-2-2, IEC 60598-1, IEC 60512-20-1, IEC 60749-32, ASTM D635-18, UL 94, UL 1694, BS 6458, and IS 11000-2-2.
As per IEC 60695-11-5, the test specimen is arranged in a position of normal use such that ignition is most likely to occur during the test. The test flame (12 mm±1mm) is applied to the surface of test specimen and removed after the specified time. In case of ignition of the test specimen the duration of burning is measured. The test specimen is considered to have satisfactorily withstood the needle flame test if there is no flame and no glowing of the test specimen and no ignition of specified layer also flames or glowing of the test specimen extinguish within 30s after the removal of needle-flame
The needle flame test determines the effect of a small flame which may result from fault conditions
