The seven-day Rongai trek on Kilimanjaro is a singular experience that begins in the north and offers seclusion and a variety of sceneries. The steady climb helps acclimate for a higher summit probability, traversing from verdant rainforests to parched deserts. The northern wildness and the Mawenzi Tarn campground are highlights. Africa's highest peak, Uhuru Peak, is reached on summit day, after which Mweka Camp is descended. Famous for its beautiful scenery, this route strikes a balance between peace and aspirations to climb Kilimanjaro.

Day 0; Arrival in Moshi

An agent from Cliff Africa Adventure will meet you at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) and escort you to your accommodation in Moshi. The hotel offers a range of amenities to make your stay enjoyable, including a swimming pool, hot water, friendly staff, Internet access, and comfortable rooms. To ensure you are fully prepared for the climb, our managers or guides will provide a briefing in the evening.

Day 1: Rongai Gate to Simba Camp

Elevation: 6,398 ft to 9,300 ft

Hiking Time:  3-4 hours

Your Seven-Day Trip to Rongai At the Rongai Gate, when park registration is completed, the Kilimanjaro Trek begins. The journey begins amid lush, deep rainforests. On this particular day, about 8 kilometers were covered. The terrain progressively rises, allowing you to travel at a comfortable speed. Simba Camp, which is tucked away at a height of about 2,625 meters, is your first overnight destination.

DAY 2: Simba Camp to Second Cave

Elevation: 9,300 ft to 11,300 ft

Hiking Time: 3-4 hours

Distance: 6 km | 4 miles

Habitat: Heath

Meals: Full Board

The walk takes you into the moorland area as you leave Simba Camp. The hike is around 7 kilometres long and leads to Second Cave, which is about 3,450 meters above sea level. The views of the surrounding environment are mesmerizing, and the scenery opens up.

 

DAY 3: Second Cave to Kikelewa Camp

Elevation: 11,300 ft to 11,811 ft

Hiking Time: 3-4 hours

Distance: 6 km | 4 miles       

Habitat: Heath

Meals: Full Board

The trip today is almost 6 kilometres long and progressively climbs to Kikelewa Camp, which is situated at an elevation of about 3,600 meters. Moorland and alpine desert blend together to form the new landscape. The isolation and the size of the countryside created a calm ambiance.

DAY 4: Kikelewa Camp to Mawenzi Tarn Camp

Elevation: 11,811 ft to 14,160 ft

Hiking Time: 3-4 hours

Distance: 5 km | 3 miles

Habitat: Alpine Desert

The Seven-Day Route to Rongai Continue your Kilimanjaro Trek to the 4,330-meter-high Mawenzi Tarn Camp. About 6 kilometres are covered in a single day. One of the famous Kilimanjaro formations, Mawenzi Peak, will be visible to you. With its stunning location next to a glacial tarn, the campsite offers an amazing night-time scene.

DAY 5: Mawenzi Tarn Camp to Kibo Hut

Elevation: 14,160 ft to 15,430 ft

Hiking Time: 5-6 hours

Distance: 8 km | 5 miles

Habitat: Alpine Desert

Meals: Full Board

Kibo Hut, the starting point for your summit attempt, will be reached by foot. You reach an elevation of roughly 4,700 meters during this roughly 10-kilometer section of the trip. As you get closer to Kibo Hut, which is situated in the saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo, the scenery turns bleak and alpine.

DAY 6: Summit – Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak and Back to Horombo Hut

Elevation: 15,430 ft to 19,341 ft

Hiking Time: 7-9 hours

Distance: 6 km | 4 miles

Habitat: Arctic

Uhuru Peak to Horombo Hut

Elevation: 19,341 ft to 12,205 ft

Hiking Time: 4-6 hours

Distance: 16 km | 10 miles

An early morning climb to Africa's highest peak, Uhuru Peak, shortly before sunrise, marks the start of the most difficult and rewarding day. Following a celebration of your accomplishment, you will descend to Horombo Hut, which is approximately 3,720 meters above sea level. With a total distance of almost 21 kilometers, this is a long and taxing day.

DAY 7: Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate

Elevation: 12,205 ft to 6,046 ft

Hiking Time: 7-9 hours

Distance: 20 km | 12 miles

Habitat: Rain Forest

Meals: Breakfast and Lunch

You travel from Horombo Hut to the Marangu Gate on the last day of your hike. As you descend, you will travel roughly 27 kilometers through areas of lush jungle and moorland. The colorful flowers and lush vegetation offer a different viewpoint of the mountain. You will thank your committed guides and porters and receive your summit certificates when arriving at the Marangu Gate and we will travel by our vehicle to your Accommodation in Arusha or Moshi for your overnight stay.
