Jozani Forest lies 35kms South-East of Zanzibar Town with an area of
about 1,000 hectares, it is the only remaining natural forest on Unguja island
where long ago you could find leopards and antelopes. At present it is the
habitat for the Red Colobus Monkeys (Colobus badius kirkii) and the Blue Sykes
Monkey. The Red Colobus monkey is one of the most endangered and rarest species
on the planet. The Red Colobus monkey that are found in this Forest are very
friendly and love to be photographed and can be viewed at close quarters by the
help of your guide. Other interesting features in this forest include the
coastal evergreen bushland, mangroove forest, saline grassland and ground water
forest, though these may require longer walks to reach.

Our Advice
·
Wear
Comfortable Shoes: The forest and cave trails include walking over uneven terrain —
closed shoes or sturdy sandals are best.
·
Bring Swimwear & Towel: You’ll have
the chance to swim in the Kuza Caves, so pack swimwear and a quick-dry towel.
·
Cash is King: While
some places accept cards, it’s smart to carry some cash for tips, small
purchases, or local souvenirs.
·
Protect Yourself from the Sun: Even
in shaded areas, Zanzibar’s UV is strong. Don’t skip the sunscreen, hat,
sunglasses and shades.
·
Stay Powered Up: Bring
a power bank or make sure your phone/camera is fully charged — You’ll want to
capture this unforgettable day.
·
Respect Local Culture: Dress
modestly when visiting villages or interacting with locals outside tourist
zones.
·
Mind Your Footing: Boardwalks
and cave paths can be slippery — take your time and watch your step, especially
after rain.

Prison Island or Changuu Island is the middle island of the three visible from the Stone Town. It takes approximately 30 minutes to get there by boat. The prison which was never used on this island was built in 1893 but was later used as a Quarantine Hospital. Apart from the Prison ruins you will also see the enormous giant tortoises which are the main attraction of the island. The tortoises were brought to the island from Seychelles by Sultan Said Majid in the 1820s. They are not indigenous and are magisterial creatures, weighing in at an average of 200 kg some are as old as over 100 years (4 turtles are 150 years). You can feed them at a fee paid at the Island, but watch out for their snapping beaks. Other marine life is also reasonably rich and Changuu provides good snorkelling. It is by no means the most extensive or varied snorkeling spot off the coast of Zanzibar, but being so close to Stone Town and so easily accessible makes it ideal for those who want to see ‘under the sea’ a little while on a city break. The island’s restaurant, Matthews, is good and well-renowned. This is especially so considering the restaurant’s charming atmosphere and good sea view. You will then be dropped off at the hotel after the excursion
