Like other products made from date palm leaves, these plates are hand-woven by artisan craftsmen in Pakistan. The skill of weaving this type of basket was present in human civilisation on the continents of both Americas, Africa and Asia. Today, only a small group of weavers still make them in several regions of Africa and Central and Southeast Asia.
These are the so-called Coil baskets, created by wrapping sun-dried palm leaves dyed with natural plant pigments around spirally rolled circles of selected grass species. They draw attention with intricate patterns, both referring to traditional baskets of Indian tribes and using modern inspirations. They will work perfectly as a decorative or utility element, both in modern interiors and in the ethno and Native style. Recently, they have often been used as decorative plates, from which compositions on walls are created.
These plates are created in many patterns and colours, and their special honey shade is due to the impregnation process in non-toxic plant preparations with a golden colour. The patterns of impregnated plates are the same as in collector plates.
POLISHING PROCESS FOR ANTIQUE LOOK!
Baskets are treated with a proprietary process of, immersion in a solution, drying, coating with wax, polishing and buffing to avoid glazed mat shine. Density of the stain can be tailored by varying the immersion time. We have been preparing Antique Look polished baskets for over five years and have found them durable and free of any carcinogenic contaminates. The technique is quite time consuming due to drying and polishing processes.
