If a person’s heart stops and no one helps, they will die in about 10 minutes. The chance of survival decreases by 10% with every passing minute. Brain damage, however, begins irreversibly after just a few minutes. Most cardiac arrests and subsequent deaths occur outside hospitals, in the presence of bystanders. The causes of such events can usually only be treated with an electric shock. With an AED, every bystander has the opportunity to start resuscitation procedures long before the arrival of an emergency team, which on average takes 10–15 minutes to reach the patient.
